Mount Pilatus summit from Lucerne with a lake cruise
Boat across the lake, cogwheel railway up the rock, gondolas down the other side: the classic way to the Mount Pilatus summit from Lucerne with a lake cruise. Here is how the loop works, when the boat runs, and which ticket to buy.

Quick answer
The Golden Round Trip in one paragraph
Pilatus-Bahnen calls it the Golden Round Trip: a boat, a cogwheel railway, an aerial cableway and panorama gondolas that together take you to the summit of Mount Pilatus and back to Lucerne.1 One ticket covers the mountain lifts, the bus between Kriens and Lucerne and the boat between Lucerne and Alpnachstad.2 It is a circle, so you never retrace a single meter.
The usual direction starts on the water. You sail from Lucerne to Alpnachstad at the foot of the mountain, ride the cogwheel railway up the steep south side, then come down by the Dragon Ride cableway and the gondolas to Kriens, where a city bus takes you back to the station. The same loop can also be done the other way round, beginning with the bus and ending on the boat.
Pilatus-Bahnen lists the Golden Round Trip from May to October, from CHF 59.90.1 That lower figure is the price with a Half Fare Card; an adult at full fare pays CHF 119.80 with a 2nd-class boat or CHF 136.80 with a 1st-class boat in 2026.7 Compare those figures with the guided and self-guided tickets further down before you decide, since a rail pass changes the sum completely.

The boat leg from pier 2
The Lake Lucerne cruise to Alpnachstad is the calm first act. The boat leaves from pier 2 in Lucerne, opposite the railway station, and on it 1st class is the upper deck and 2nd class the main deck.812 Luzern Tourismus gives the crossing as 50 to 90 minutes and says the boat runs only from May to October.9
To reach Alpnachstad the boat passes from the main lake into Lake Alpnach under the Acheregg Bridge, and the steamer Unterwalden lowers its funnel to fit beneath it.1314 At Alpnachstad the landing stage is just across the street from the cogwheel railway station. Watch the shoreline here: the lake narrows, the slopes of Pilatus come close, and the city disappears behind you.
Timing the boat is the one tricky part of the day. A self-guided Golden Round Trip ticket warns that there are only 2 to 5 boat departures a day, and asks you to check the timetable carefully. Choose your boat first, then fit the mountain around it, and you will not end up waiting at the pier with a train to catch.

Choose the line closest to your plans
Commissioned in 1889, with a gradient of up to 48 per cent and a journey time of around 30 minutes, this is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world in figures.
Up the steepest cogwheel railway
From Alpnachstad the cogwheel railway climbs to Pilatus Kulm. Pilatus-Bahnen calls it the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, opened in 1889, with a gradient of up to 48 percent and a journey of around 30 minutes.11 Over a line of 4618 m it climbs 1635 m; the ride up takes 27 minutes and the ride down 33.10
The line has a long history. It opened under steam on 4 June 1889, reopened electrified on 15 May 1937, and restarted with new trains on 5 June 2023.17 Sitting by the window you look straight down the cliff faces, and in early summer the meadows below are full of flowers.
In 2026 the cogwheel railway runs from 11 May to 29 November.3 To avoid long waits in summer, a self-guided ticket recommends reserving the cogwheel train in advance on Pilatus-Bahnen's own site. On busy days a reserved seat saves you a queue at the bottom station. Sit on the side of the carriage facing the valley for the deepest views on the way up.

The summit and the way down
At the top the view opens over the lake and the Alps. Pilatus-Bahnen gives the summit view at 2,132 meters; Luzern Tourismus prints 2,128 m for Pilatus Kulm, so do not be surprised to see both figures.429 Short paths lead to the peaks around the station, and there are restaurants and hotels at the summit for a meal at your own cost.
The descent towards Kriens begins with the Dragon Ride aerial cableway, a ride of about 5 minutes down to Fräkmüntegg. From there the panorama gondola takes 15 minutes to Krienseregg and another 15 minutes to Kriens, where bus number 1 brings you back to Lucerne station in 11 minutes.
Allow time at the top, not only for the view but for the weather. Clouds can wrap the summit for an hour and then clear, and a slower lunch is the best way to wait for them. A self-guided ticket notes that the trip runs in almost all weather, so dress for the mountain rather than for the town.
How long it takes to get to Mt Pilatus from Lucerne
The question of how long it takes to get to Mt Pilatus from Lucerne has two answers. The quick way, by bus to Kriens or by train to Alpnachstad, takes 1 hour 10 minutes each way according to Luzern Tourismus.30 The train to Alpnachstad itself takes 17 minutes on Luzern Tourismus's page, and Pilatus-Bahnen gives a slightly longer time.915
The full loop with the boat takes most of a day. A self-guided Golden Round Trip ticket is listed at 4.5 hours, and a guided tour from Lucerne at 5.5 hours. Add time for lunch at the top, a walk on the summit paths and a margin for the boat, and plan on leaving after breakfast and being back in the late afternoon.
Outside the boat season there is a version without water. Pilatus-Bahnen's Silver Round Trip replaces the boat with the public train from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, then continues by cogwheel railway, cableway and gondolas.15 It is shorter, and it works on days when the boat timetable does not fit your plans.
Guided tour, self-guided ticket or a rail pass
The guided option packs the Mount Pilatus summit from Lucerne with a lake cruise into a single outing. Best of Switzerland Tours meets you at the Bus Parking Landenberg, drives you to Kriens, takes the gondola and cableway up, and comes down by cogwheel railway to a one-hour boat back in summer. Places start at $203; 2,655 reviewers average 4.69.
Read its autumn notes. From 19 October to 29 November 2026 there is no boat ride and a lunch voucher is given instead, and until 27 November the trip goes up and down by cogwheel train while the cable car is serviced. The self-guided Pilatus Golden Round Trip by boat from Lucerne starts from $148, rated 4.69 from 1,462 reviews, and lets children under 6 travel free.
With a rail pass you may need neither. Holders of a Swiss Travel Pass ride the boat and bus legs free and buy only a discounted ticket for the mountain, and both the Swiss Travel Pass and the Half Fare Card bring 50% off the Pilatus routes.56 The Lucerne Travel Pass covers Pilatus in full.6
