Lucerne day trip from Zurich, with time on the lake
A Lucerne day trip from Zurich is one of the easiest in Switzerland: fast trains, a compact old town and the lake right outside the station. Here is how to do it on your own or with a tour, and how to put a boat into the day.

Is Lucerne a day trip from Zurich?
Is Lucerne a day trip from Zurich? Easily. Luzern Tourismus says direct IR and IC trains link Lucerne and Zurich main station every 30 minutes, with a travel time of 45 to 50 minutes each way.1 That puts you on the lakefront before mid-morning with a normal start, and home for dinner without rushing.
Lucerne is also built for a short visit. Switzerland Tourism calls it one of the major stops on any trip to Switzerland and a starting point for excursions around the lake.4 The Chapel Bridge, the old town and the boat piers are all within a few minutes' walk of the station, so you lose no time on local transport.
The question is not whether Lucerne fits in a day, but how much else you add to it. The old town and a boat fill a relaxed day. A mountain such as Pilatus or Rigi turns it into a full day. Titlis, further away, takes over the day almost completely and leaves Lucerne as a short stop. Decide on that before you buy any tickets, as it changes both the budget and the alarm clock.

Doing it yourself by train and boat
The independent version is simple. Take a train from Zurich main station, walk out of Lucerne station towards the lake, and you are at the boat piers: pier 1 for Weggis, Vitznau, Brunnen and Flüelen, pier 2 for Alpnachstad and pier 3 for Küssnacht and the Bürgenstock.2 This site's 1-hour catamaran round trip also boards at pier 3, in front of the KKL. Check which pier your boat uses before you walk out of the station, and the change from train to boat takes minutes.
Old town before lunch, the lake after it: that rhythm works well. SGV's catamaran cruise leaves every hour in the winter timetable, from 09:07 to 19:07, and from 08:07 to 23:07 in summer 2027, which makes it easy to fit around a train home.56 Book it from $38 and keep the right to cancel for nothing until a day ahead.
With a Swiss Travel Pass the scheduled boats cost nothing extra, as SGV lists free travel with the pass on them.7 Pass holders can therefore take a line boat to Weggis or Vitznau instead of a round trip, step off in a lakeside village, and return on a later boat, all within the same ticket.

Lucerne is one of the major stops on any trip to Switzerland. In addition to the unmistakable cityscape with the lake, Chapel Bridge and historic old town, Lucerne offers many sights and is the perfect starting point for excursions to the region around Lake Lucerne.
Coach tours from Zurich with a cruise
If you prefer to be driven, several Lucerne day trips start at Zurich's Sihlquai bus station. The one built most around the water is a 9-hour day with Swisstours: a coach of 1 hour, a boat cruise of 30 minutes to the Bürgenstock, 4 hours there, another 30-minute cruise back and 2 hours in Lucerne. It starts from $144, though it has only 16 reviews, rated 4.46.
A cheaper and more flexible option gives you the city on your own. A 10-hour day from Zurich includes a short orientation drive in Lucerne, then 6 hours of free time, with a boat trip offered as an option from April to October. It starts from $77, rated 4.32 from 231 reviews; the guide is not with you during the free time.
Read what each tour calls a cruise. One of the most reviewed tours, the Titlis and Lucerne day, shows Lake Lucerne only as scenery on the way, with no boat at all. It is rated 4.75 from 4,112 reviews and starts from $199, but it is a mountain day, not a lake day. If the boat is what you came for, pick a tour that names the crossing in its plan.

Mt Pilatus and Lucerne day trip from Zurich with a lake cruise
The classic combination is a Mt Pilatus and Lucerne day trip from Zurich with a lake cruise. On one such tour the coach leaves Zurich, stops in Lucerne, takes you up Pilatus by cable car, down by cogwheel train to Alpnachstad and back to Lucerne on a 1-hour boat, before the coach returns to Zurich. Seats cost from $206, and 1,201 reviewers rate the day 4.78.
Season matters here. From 19 October to 29 November 2026 that tour has no boat ride and includes a lunch voucher instead. Pilatus-Bahnen confirms that the boat between Lucerne and Alpnachstad ran only until 18 October in 2026.12 Between late autumn and spring, a Pilatus day from Zurich is a mountain day, not a lake day.
Doing the same loop on your own is possible with the train from Zurich and the Golden Round Trip from Lucerne, which Pilatus-Bahnen runs from May to October.20 It is a long day; leave Zurich early and check the boat times before you go.
The Bürgenstock by boat and funicular
The Bürgenstock is the lake trip closest to the city. SGV's motor vessel Bürgenstock crosses hourly from Lucerne to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock on every day of the year, in around 30 minutes; Switzerland Tourism gives 25.1321 At Kehrsiten a funicular climbs to the resort at 874 m; opened in 1888, it was the world's first funicular with electric drive.14 The view from the boat as the steep wooded slope comes closer is half the fun.
The ride up takes 4 minutes over just under a kilometer, at gradients of up to 58 percent.22 At the top, the Hammetschwand lift, built in 1905, rises 153 meters in under a minute, and Switzerland Tourism calls it the highest outdoor lift in Europe.2324 The viewing platform at the top is free; only the ride is charged.25
In winter, check before you go: one boat-and-funicular ticket notes that the Hammetschwand lift and the Felsenweg rock path close in the winter months. The boat, however, keeps running all year, and on the Bürgenstock funicular Swiss Travel Pass holders pay half.26
A plan for the day, and Lucerne day trips beyond
For a first visit, keep it simple: morning train, a walk across the Chapel Bridge and through the old town, lunch by the water, an afternoon boat and an early evening train home. The Lion Monument is about a 20-minute walk from the station, and it draws around 1.4 million visitors a year, so go early if you want it quiet.2728
The Chapel Bridge has its own story: a large part of it burned on 18 August 1993, and it reopened on 14 April 1994 after eight months of rebuilding.1819 The Swiss Museum of Transport, which calls itself Switzerland's most-visited museum, is 10 minutes by boat from the station.2930
Once you have seen the city, Lucerne day trips reach far beyond it: the Rigi by boat and cogwheel train, Pilatus by the Golden Round Trip, or the Titlis, 45 minutes from Lucerne by train to Engelberg.312032 For those, spend a night in Lucerne rather than in Zurich, and you can be on one of the first boats of the morning.
